Suese’s marsh (Livorno), Site of Community Interest: materials for a management plan. The paper reports on the investigation of flora, vegetation and bird communities carried out in 2002-2004 in «Padule di Suese» (Suese’s marsh, Collesalvetti, province of Leghorn, NW Tuscany), a proposed Site of Community Interest within the framework of EU «Habitat» Directive.

After an evaluation of the current conditions of the biotope, its previous conditions and characters were recorded; the study has also concerned the changes of the plant populations and bird communities, both subject to a marked degradation over the years. A series of action has been defined, in order to restore the original conditions in the study area; furthermore, general management guidelines are proposed. The biotope, despite its limited surface (about 120 hectares) and a high degree of anthropic activity, shows a remarkable bird richness and strong potential in terms of vegetation, calling for an urgent action of restoration and valorisation of the area, a relic strip of the ancient coastal marshes in Pisa and Leghorn territories.
